Alphonso Nichols, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with over 10 years of private practice experience.
A Louisville native, Dr. Nichols attended the University of Louisville for medical school, completed psychiatric residency training at the University of Cincinnati, and returned to Louisville to complete a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. During training, he served as Chief Resident in Child Psychiatry and received numerous clinical and teaching awards, including several awards for Humanism in Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Nichols has a strong reputation as an extremely competent, caring, and highly respected clinician. In 2019, he was named one of Louisville’s ‘Top Doctors’ by Louisville Magazine, an award that is granted by vote of 3,000 physician members of the Greater Louisville Medical Society.
Combining years of experience in academic medicine, teaching, and private practice with a history of successfully treating hundreds of children and teens with ADHD, Dr. Nichols brings to the table a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
An avid researcher, Dr. Nichols has published a number of scholarly articles and presented for international conferences. He is a former full-time teaching faculty member at the University of Louisville. He has also served as the Medical Director of the Psychiatry Unit at Kosairs Children’s Hospital. Dr. Nichols is also the recipient of the Golden Apple teaching award.
Here at Next Step 2 Mental Health, Dr. Nichols serves the community as the Medical Director of our Child and Adolescent ADHD Programs, Dr. Nichols spends countless hours working with our expert, multidisciplinary treatment team to ensure our programs and treatment meet and exceed the needs of both parent and child. He is deeply involved in nearly every aspect of our Child and Adolescent Programs, helping to ensure that our members are provided with comprehensive ADHD treatment that works. He specializes in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. He can also provide family therapy.
